Surrealist tattooing uses realistic rendering to describe things that could not exist — merged forms, impossible perspective and dream logic held together by convincing light.

Surrealism works because the rendering is believable. Light, shadow and texture stay consistent even when the subject is not.
Composition carries the concept. Where elements overlap, dissolve or repeat is what turns a collection of images into a single idea.
The process is conversational. Mood, meaning and reference material matter more than naming a fixed subject at the outset.
Scale is usually generous. Layered imagery needs room to separate cleanly and to stay readable as it heals.
Colour and greyscale both work. Black and grey often suits atmospheric, unsettling pieces; colour suits brighter, more painterly ideas.
Multi-session planning is normal, with the composition mapped across the placement before any detail is committed.
