Blackwork at London's Glitch

Blackwork is defined by the use of black ink as the dominant element of a tattoo. What happens within that framework can vary enormously.

Some blackwork relies on strong areas of solid saturation and bold silhouettes. Other approaches use fine line, dotwork, negative space, texture or softer tonal transitions to create depth without introducing colour.

Blackwork can include ornamental compositions, abstract work, contemporary tribal influences, illustrative designs, engraving-inspired pieces and experimental freehand work. It can feel heavy and graphic or extremely refined and intricate depending on the artist and concept.

At London's Glitch, our artists don't approach blackwork as one fixed visual style. Each artist brings their own influences, technique and way of working with the body. Some create precise ornamental compositions, while others work with expressive abstraction, fine line, texture or more illustrative forms.

Placement and body flow are especially important in blackwork. Large areas of contrast, negative space and shape can completely change how a tattoo interacts with the body, which is why composition is designed around the individual placement rather than treated as an image simply transferred onto skin.

Blackwork can work equally well for small standalone tattoos, larger statement pieces, sleeves, body projects, cover-ups and designs that combine several disciplines.
