Microrealism compresses photoreal detail into a small footprint — miniature portraits, objects and scenes that hold their structure at a fraction of the usual scale.
It is a technical discipline first. Needle choice, contrast and restraint decide whether a small piece stays legible for years or blurs into a shape.
Microrealism works by simplification, not shrinking. Detail that adds nothing at small scale is removed so the essential shapes, values and edges do the work.
Contrast matters more than line count. A small piece needs clear darks and clean highlights to read from normal viewing distance.
Placement is chosen for skin quality and stability — flatter areas with less movement and less sun exposure hold fine detail for far longer.
Reference quality is decisive. Sharp, well-lit photographs allow an artist to make accurate decisions about tone and structure before any needle touches skin.
Ageing is planned into the design. Our artists deliberately leave breathing room between elements so the tattoo settles rather than closes up.
Sizing is discussed honestly. If an idea needs more space to survive, we will say so rather than promise detail that cannot hold.
