Dotwork builds tone from individual points rather than solid shading — creating soft gradients, texture and depth without hard edges.
It is patient work. Density, spacing and rhythm are what give a stippled piece its smoothness and its longevity.
Dotwork is a shading language, not a subject matter. It can carry ornamental pattern, geometry, botanical studies or abstract form equally well.
Density controls value. Tighter clusters read as shadow, looser fields as light, and the transition between them is where the technique lives.
Spacing is planned for healing. Dots placed too close merge over time, so our artists deliberately build in room for settling.
It pairs naturally with clean linework, giving structure to the composition while the stippling handles depth.
Sessions can be longer than expected for the size of the piece, because tone is built point by point rather than in passes.
Placement and scale are chosen so the texture stays visible — very small stippled areas rarely hold their detail.
